chassis; however, more inclusive definitions include any car with off-road
design elements as an SUV. Although a Sports
Utility Vehicle (SUVs) built with a unibody construction (like
passenger cars) is sometimes referred to as a crossover SUV, the distinctions
between the two are becoming more ambiguous due to the vehicles' capabilities,
marketing labels, and the electrification of new models. Military and
low-volume versions from the late 1930s and 1949-era four-wheel-drive station
waggons and carryalls are the ancestors of today's SUVs. The first SUV in its
current form was the 1984 Jeep Cherokee (XJ).
Although some SUVs
made now have a unibody design, in the past, many SUVs had a body-on-frame
design. The popularity of Sports Utility
Vehicle (SUVs) significantly rose in the late 1990s and early 2000s,
frequently at the expense of big sedans and station waggons. Smaller, mid-size,
and crossover SUVs have lately seen a rise in popularity. SUVs have drawn
criticism for a number of safety and environmental issues.
Compared to smaller cars, they often have worse fuel economy
and use more resources during manufacturing, which increases their impact on
climate change and environmental damage.
Sports Utility Vehicle (SUVs) were the second-largest contributor to the
global growth in carbon emissions between 2010 and 2018. Their danger of
rollovers is increased by their greater centre of gravity. Its greater heft
lengthens their stopping distance, lowers visibility, and worsens the effects
of impacts on other road users. They are at least twice more likely to kill any
pedestrians they strike due to their greater front-end profile.
Furthermore, the psychological sense of security they give drivers makes
them less careful on the road.
